General Visual Line of Sight Certificate
New UK drone regulations are being introduced into the UK on the 1st January 2020. These regulations are designed to align with the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) rules, and build upon the new drone registration scheme.
From the 1st January 2020, there will no longer be a distinction between a commercial and non-commercial drone pilot. Instead, the new rules will introduce 3 drone flight categories. These are:
Open Category
Drone operations that present a low (or no) risk to third parties – ideal for those flying drones under 2kg.
Specific Category
Drone operations that present a greater risk than that of the Open Category, or where one or more elements of the operation falls outside of the Open category – ideal for those flying drones above 2kg.
Certified Category
Operations that present an equivalent risk to that of manned aviation, and will be subjected to the regulatory regime – suitable for those that were previously operating under an Operating Safety Case (OSC).
What to expect
Online Ground School (21hrs)
The GVC drone training course starts with three days of ground school, which is taught over 100 e-learning units and end-of-unit assessments. During this stage, students will learn everything needed to ensure they’re fully prepared for both the theory exam and the flight planning assessment.
During the course, students will also need to create an Operations Manual. This manual, along with your GVC Certificate from iRed®, can then be submitted to the CAA for your operational permissions.
Practical Flight Assessment (1hr)
The flight assessment must be completed in-person. Every student will be fully briefed before hand, with everyone knowing what to expect and how to undertake the assessment. We aim to create a relaxed and enjoyable environment throughout the assessment, ensuring the best performance from all students.
We’ve teamed up with Flock® to offer free flight assessment insurance for all students attending this course.
