“Great course! Steve Welland was very knowledgeable and good at communicating the complex information across in a way that everyone can understand. A nice mix of powerpoint slides, discussion and practical demonstrations.”

Matt Linsdell, Aerial Image Revolution

“Fantastic course, instructed by some of the most knowledgeable people in industry. Both theory based and vocational, it’s a great mix of both.”

Robert Wade, Condor Ferries

“The iRed Level 1 course was extremely informative and delivered in a manner to suit the person with the least experience. The instructors profound level of knowledge made what could be perceived as a dull topic very interesting.”

Darren Arnold, AAIS

“Very good knowledge provided during the course and lots of information attained. The course very much exceeded expectations.”

Jamie Taylor, AWE

“Excellent course and would thoroughly recommend it to those wanting to add a service or upgrade your skills. Lots of physics theory as well as real world applications. Well thought out course.”

Richard Sims, Sims UAV

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Often seen used for search & rescue and low-light scenarios, thermal imaging also has a multitude of applications within the inspection industry.

As the only non-destructive method to test a buildings fabric, thermal cameras are an invaluable tool within the built environment. From missing insulation to air leakage, qualified thermographers can find a wide range of problems and issues – without having to remove and test materials. Outside of the built environment, infrared technology is also able to quickly detect loose connections and faults within distribution boards, panels, machinery and solar panels.

Our thermal imaging courses teach the fundamental skills and knowledge to start using thermal cameras for inspections. Whether you’re a surveyor, drone pilot or just starting out – we’re here to help.

Any object with a temperature above absolute zero (-273.15ºC) emits infrared radiation. The higher the temperature of the object, the greater the intensity of infrared radiation.

Infrared technology is designed to detect the intensity of radiation given off by an object. Once detected, a thermal camera creates an image of the object – based on the radiation it emits. This image is rendered using artificial colours, turning invisible radiation into a visible image.

Once captured, thermal images can be analysed to establish patterns and interruptions. For example, a loose connection in an electrical circuit or heat loss in a commercial building.

Thermal imaging cameras cannot take accurate readings without adjustments. Many factors – such as reflectivity, emissivity and humidity – must be changed in order to collect reliable information. Without these adjustments, most thermal reports are misleading and ultimately unreliable.

Currently, there are two principal standards for thermal imaging in the UK – these are ABBE ISO 6781 and PCN ISO 18436. By training to these standards, we ensure that our students are fully qualified to deliver commercial thermal imaging surveys for a wide range of applications.

The iRed® Academy also provides third-party accreditation to these standards, enabling you to prove that you’re not just qualified, but competent in operating a thermal camera and delivering thermal reports.

Founded in 2002, the iRed® Academy was one of the first thermal imaging training centres in the world. Our courses are delivered by industry experts, many of whom have helped shape and define the standards and legislation in which we operate to today.

iRed® is currently the only thermal imaging training centre to deliver training to both ABBE ISO 6781 and PCN ISO 18436 standards, and is the only thermal academy to be approved by the CAA for drone training.

Our team of specialists work closely with leading academic institutions, including the University of Portsmouth and University of Plymouth, to pioneer new techniques and practices for industry.

We supply everything that you need for the duration of your course, including thermal cameras. However, it is recommended that students bring a laptop with FLIR® Tools installed, as this will be required to process and analyse thermal images during the course.

FLIR® Tools is available to download for free here.

All our courses have pre-course reading materials that are required to be completed before commencement of the course. Details of which will be sent out to you once your place has been confirmed. Students opting for an accreditation will have additional paperwork to fill out beforehand.

Accreditation offers independent assurance that you’re both qualified and competent in operating a thermal imaging camera. This also provides you with an edge on your competitors. However, the nature of the work required to achieve this additional accreditation means that it can take longer to complete, especially if you are new to industry. On successful completion of a course, we provide delegates with an industry recognised iRed® Certified qualification, which enables delegates to advertise their skills and build the experience needed for their logbook.

Owning your own thermal camera is not required, as we’ll provide the tools for the duration of your course. However, students are more than welcome to bring their own camera if they’d feel more comfortable. We recommend that if you do not own a camera beforehand, you should attend the course first before purchasing any equipment to ensure that you have gained instructors advice on which camera is best for you.

Our instructors work closely with individual students on a daily basis to ensure that relevant support is in place before their final exam. Each of our courses include daily assessments, which require a 75% pass mark, however, they are there for the students benefit and can be used as revision throughout the course. The instructor will use these as a guide to see how each student is progressing throughout the course. If a student fails the final exam, they are able to resit free of charge and will be eligible for a revision session with their instructor.

We completely understand that personal and work commitments can sometimes be difficult to avoid. Whilst we make every effort to be as flexible as we can for our students, we recommend that you only book a place if you are available for the full duration of the course. If you book your place and you then become available for that specific course date, just let us know and we will discuss your options.

It is most important to us to ensure that every student attending our courses is aware of the commitment, time and workload that is required for their training. If you are unsure on whether a course is for you, please give us a call and we will be able to give you further information or recommend an alternative course which may be more suitable. We would always recommend chatting to a member of our team before proceeding with booking if you are not 100% sure, as you could incur fees if you change your mind later down the line.

Whether you are attending in-person or virtually, our instructors are always on hand to give additional support and one-to-one mentoring where required. If you would like to have a chat away from the group, then this can be done during break times or alternatively when the session finishes each day.
