FAQ

General

Thermal imaging is widely utilized in search & rescue operations and low-light environments, but it also has numerous uses in the inspection industry.

Being the sole non-invasive technique to examine the structural integrity of buildings, thermal cameras are essential in the construction and maintenance sectors. They enable trained thermographers to identify various issues such as missing insulation and air leaks, without the need for physical or invasive testing of materials. Beyond building applications, infrared technology is adept at swiftly pinpointing electrical issues like loose connections and faults in distribution boards, control panels, machinery, and solar panels.

Our thermal imaging training courses are designed to provide the essential skills and knowledge required for conducting thermal camera inspections. These courses are suitable for a wide range of professionals, including surveyors and drone pilots, as well as those new to the field, and we are committed to offering the necessary support and guidance.

Every object with a temperature above absolute zero (-273.15ºC) emits infrared radiation, and the intensity of this radiation increases with the object's temperature.

Infrared technology is engineered to capture the intensity of radiation emitted by objects. A thermal camera then converts this radiation into a visible image, using artificial colors to render the invisible radiation visible.

These thermal images can be analyzed to identify patterns and irregularities. This capability is particularly useful for detecting issues like loose connections in electrical circuits or heat loss in commercial buildings.

Thermal imaging cameras require calibration and adjustments to provide accurate readings. Factors like reflectivity, emissivity, and humidity must be correctly set to gather dependable data. Without these adjustments, thermal reports can be misleading and unreliable.

In the UK, there are two main standards for thermal imaging: ABBE ISO 6781 and PCN ISO 18436. Training to these standards ensures that our students are fully equipped to conduct commercial thermal imaging surveys across various applications.

Additionally, the iRed offers third-party accreditation in line with these standards. This accreditation not only certifies that you are qualified but also demonstrates your competence in operating thermal cameras and producing accurate thermal reports.

Founded in 2002, iRed is a pioneer in the field, being among the first thermal imaging training centers globally. Our courses are taught by industry veterans, many of whom have played a significant role in shaping the standards and regulations we follow today.

iRed stands out as the only training center offering courses that meet both ABBE ISO 6781 and PCN ISO 18436 standards. Additionally, it is the sole thermal imaging academy endorsed by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) for drone training.

Our team collaborates closely with prominent academic institutions, such as the University of Portsmouth and the University of Plymouth. This collaboration is focused on developing innovative techniques and practices for the industry.

You don't need to own a thermal camera to attend our course, as we supply all the necessary equipment for its duration. However, students are encouraged to bring their own camera if they prefer using it. We advise those who don't already own a camera to attend the course before making any purchases. This way, you can benefit from our instructors' guidance on selecting the camera that best suits your needs.

Accreditation provides an independent validation of both your qualification and competence in using a thermal imaging camera, offering a competitive advantage in your field. However, attaining this extra accreditation can be a more time-consuming process, particularly for those new to the industry. Upon successfully finishing a course, we award participants with an iRed® Certified qualification, which is recognized in the industry. This qualification allows delegates to showcase their skills and accumulate the necessary experience for their logbook.
