Drone Survey FAQs

What is a drone survey?

If you want to operate a drone commercially in the UK, you will need to gain either an A2 Certificate of Competency (A2 CofC) or General Visual Line-of-Sight Certificate (GVC) from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). Whilst some drones can be operated without a qualification, pilots will not be able to fly within 150m of recreational, commercial or industrial areas without one. This means that most commercial jobs will be unworkable.

In order to get a qualification, aspiring pilots will need to attend a training course at a CAA approved training centre known as a Recognised Assessment Entity (RAE).

Training ensures you are both confident and competent in operating a drone. Not only does training ensure you are less likely to have an accident when flying, but also assures clients that you are capable of carrying out a service.

How accurate is a drone survey?

This largely depends on what type of survey you’re looking to book. Accuracy can mean different things for different sensors. For example, we use the highest resolution thermal cameras available to industry – but we can achieve more detail in our images if we fly closer to a building or structure. Whilst this is possible, it means the flights will take longer and the data will take longer to process – and most likely an increased costs.

In short, we can make sure our surveys are as accurate as possible, whilst fitting to your budget.

How much does a drone survey cost?

No – iRed® provides free drone insurance via Coverdrone for any and all practical flight assessments during your course.

Are your drone pilots accredited?

Our qualified drone pilots are approved by the CAA to provide drone surveys and inspections nationwide. We even have a specialist CAA Operating Safety Case (OSC), which enables us to fly closer to buildings and structures than standard drone pilots. For thermal imaging, our drone pilots are accredited by the British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing (BINDT) to deliver thermal imaging surveys to the ISO 18436 standard.

Unfortunately, drone pilots claiming to be ‘CAA accredited’ are falsely selling their services. In the UK, the Civil Aviation Authority approves drone pilots on an annual basis – they do not provide accreditation.

As the only CAA drone training provider with an active surveying department, we understand the rules and regulations better than most. This enables us to deliver drone surveys that are guaranteed to be compliant with the latest UK rules and regulations.

How do I book a drone survey?

Don’t worry – it happens! Our courses are packed full with lots of useful knowledge, and sometimes it can be hard to remember everything when it comes to your test or assessment – this is why we offer one free re-sit on all of drone training courses. This also gives you a chance to go through your course materials again before re-taking the test at a later date.
